AARON SISKIND: What I was concerned with was what a picture can mean, what a picture can say. And I was kind of examining and, to a certain extent, challenging all the premises of--of social documentation. What I was really interested in was making pictures which satisfy me--which has a certain kind of beauty and had a certain kind of mystery and had a kind of enchantment. But it was just merely because I isolated subject matter that the documentary guy thought I was running away from life, so to speak [laughter].
