NARRATOR: Unlike water waves, sound waves travel in all directions. If you had a point source of sound, its energy would radiate like this. Let's look at a model of a small section of the radiating wave. We'll use this suspended spring to illustrate the action of waves in one plane. Waves can be created by both pushing and pulling on the spring. While the energy of the wave moves from one end of the spring to the other, any given coil simply vibrates back and forth.
